A team generally needs defined leadership. However, the task of leading a team can be daunting. There are really several different functions combined in the role of “team leader.” Because of the complexity of the task and because of the leader’s skills or style, the leader often focuses on one of the roles to the exclusion of the others. Therefore, we highly recommend breaking out the various leadership roles. The more difficult, complex, or sensitive the task, the more benefit there is in having a skilled facilitator, in separating the leader or decider and facilitator roles, and in having a designated administrator.
The larger the team and the more difficult the task is, the more need there is for role structure. When you add structured roles, you improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
