Debt is a powerful tool, but it is also dangerous. This double edge is reflected even in the language we use to describe it. Call it debt and it sounds bad. Call it credit and it sounds good. Call it leverage and it sounds almost magical. In fact, all these words mean the same thing. Dept can be both useful and destructive but, like all powerful tools, it is important that those who use it not only understand the power it has but make sure they use it responsibly as well.
Although the UK has got richer in recent years, its citizens have got more debt, and for some the debt has become uncontrollable. The effects of too much debt are so much more than financial: they can mean losing control of your affairs, and they can wreck your confidence and ruin your credit rating. All too often, people who find themselves in too much debt bury their head in the sand, hoping that the problem will go away. It doesn’t. Hiding from debt usually makes it worse.
There is also evidence that debt is now being used not just to buy the occassional luxury, but as a way of life. A recent survey showed that nearly a quarter of people are going into debt just to pay their household bills. What’s even more worrying is that many people do not even know how much interest they are paying on their debt.
Many borrowers spend far too little time researching the market. They might spend days or weeks looking for the cheapest television and then just accept the finance offer made by the shop. You should spend just as long looking for the best finance deal as you do looking for the television. In fact, looking for the best loan can save you much more than finding the lowest price.
The finance industry rarely rewards loyalty. This is even truer of the area of credit. The only way to stay ahead of the game is to move your business from one lender to another as rates change to make sure you always get the best deal. In fact, ever-larger proportions of building society business are not loans for new purchases but people remortgaging their homes looking for cheaper loans. That might not be good news for the lenders involved, but it does show that power is shifting from the lenders to ordinary people, which is good news for most of us.
The world of debt or credit is not a fair one. What’s important is that you know the rules and use them to your advantage. The question is: Are you willing to take responsibility and learn the skills necessary to get you out of debt?
