Dear Fellow Achiever

Being yourself may not always sound an attractive goal. Sometimes when things don’t look so great we may start wishing that we were someone else! If only I could get away from here; if only I had another job; if only I could meet a new lover; if only I had more money; if only I was more like … Yes, the grass may look greener on the other side, but when you eventually get there you discover an obvious but amazing truth: you have taken yourself with you! There is no escaping yourself; changing your circumstances will not necessarily make you happier. Contentment begins with self-awareness and self-acceptance and it focuses on the now. While you are wishing that things could be different, you will always feel disappointed with what you have and who you are at this moment. The trick is to be able to accept yourself just as you are (including all the bits you don’t like very much). When you are feeling more comfortable with who you are you gain a sense of inner peace and you take that with you wherever you go.

Success can be measured in many ways, but we cannot define it by external criteria alone: in other words, fame and fortune cannot necessarily ‘fix’ us. And I’m not advocating a life of obscurity and poverty because that won’t fix us either. No, true success is felt inside: it’s an inner sense of satisfaction about a job well done, an opportunity grasped, an outcome achieved, a problem resolved, and it always brings with it an underlying feeling of appreciation and well-being.

Self-awareness is probably the most important thing towards becoming a champion!
