How to achieve your lifetime goals

(If the audio excerpt does not begin automatically click here)

You may have already gone through the process of creating a list of lifetime goals ““ the next step is to actually start the process of achieving them. This involves creating a list of smaller goals that you plan to achieve over the next 25 years preparatory to reaching your lifetime goals. After creating a 25-year plan, make a 5-year plan, then a 1-year plan, then a 6-month plan and then a 1-month plan. Get the picture? Each plan is founded and contributes to the lifetime plan.

The 3rd step is to make a To Do List that are tasks that you should do everyday. But be realistic: you might have to do your research first by reading material that will help make your daily goals more realistic. By doing these tasks, are you living a life that is worth living or do you just exist from day to day?

Stay motivated everyday by assessing your To Do List then examining your longer term plans to see if there is any need to make changes due to the experience and priorities that you have imbibed. You may find the following general guidelines useful for this purpose:

1) Is each goal stated positively?

2) Is it precise? This allows you to measure achievement accurately.

3) Have you set priorities among the goals that you have listed down?

4) Did you write down your goals? You will be surprised how much more forceful the goals become.

5) Are the low-level goals small enough to achieve?

6) Can you control the outcome of your goals?

7) Are your goals realistically low?

8) Did you make your goals high enough to pose a challenge?

It is important to reward yourself somehow once you have accomplished a goal. Absorb the feelings that come with goal achievement and rank your progress among all the plans that you made earlier. What is a good way to reward yourself? It depends ““ some people find it sufficient to treat themselves to a sweet treat. Others like bigger rewards. Just make sure the reward”’s worth is proportionate to the magnitude of the task.

You will find that assessment of your goals is an ongoing process every time you achieve a goal. If you found the goal to be much too easy to accomplish, maybe you should make the next set of goals more difficult. If the task took much too long to accomplish, maybe the goals should be a bit easier. Learning is an ongoing process as well so maybe you should change other goals too to reflect this. For example, perhaps your skills might need adjustment so this will, in turn, affect your goal setting and assessment.

Should you find it difficult to meet goals or outright fail, do not think that this completely derails your plans. So long as you learned from your performance, that is what counts.

Your maturity will be reflected in the changes you make in your goals. Some goals can be let go if they are not suited anymore to your short term and long term plans. Do not be a slave to the goals you have set. Maintain a degree of flexibility.

Simple changes to simple things make life more enjoyable.

Enjoy life more – Embrace change

(If the audio excerpt does not begin automatically click here)

Do you feel that your life is starting to stagnate into a boring routine? Well before you get depressed, break away from that cycle! Do something to get the adrenalin pounding through your veins again. The easiest way is to make simple changes, here”’s how:

Same end, different means ““ drive a different route to work, take a walk during lunch time instead of going to war with your paperwork again, read suspense novels instead of your usual genre, etc. The end result may be the same but doing it another way opens up a new pathway of experience that you may find surprisingly refreshing. You might even find that this new way is better or even easier. Change one thing at a time until you”™re totally comfortable with it.

Scale down or up ““ When you put layers of clothing on, it will be impossible for you not to feel the added weight of the textile materials right? The same goes with your life. The more complicated it is the more you have to deal with: different people or situations. If you”™re too stressed with the amount of work that entails, scale down. Distribute your responsibilities, learn to delegate and be polite but firm in saying “no” to added work. Now, if you want to move up on the career ladder, start accepting more duties. Again, do only as much as you are able.

Change good habits for better ones ““ If you keep on slugging it out with the Stairmaster every time you go to the gym, sooner or later, you are going to get bored with it. Why not try Pilates or kickboxing or swimming to keep fit? There are a lot of ways to keep fit. Even running around keeping up with your kids”™ energy will reduce calories. Speaking of kids, if you take time to help them with schoolwork why don”™t you try getting them to join you in other worthwhile activities like sports or hobbies or even volunteer work. The life lessons you”™ll both learn will be priceless and the bonding time that will come about is an added bonus too.

A change of scenery ““ Sometimes a simple flower arrangement or a funny cartoon can make a dreary office more cheerful. The eye seeks out and immediately zones in on something that alters their usual image so if you add on a little splash of color to what it usually sees, you”™ll definitely get a reaction. Pleasant or not, that change breaks the routine.

Simple changes to simple things make life more enjoyable.

How to defeat procrastination – Believe you can

(If the audio excerpt does not begin automatically click here)

The power of belief is a key to success in everything we do. Whether your goal is to rise to the top of your profession or to be a better weekend golfer, you have a better chance of success if you believe you’ll be successful. And by believing that you can defeat procrastination, you can start to take charge of your life today.

Learn how to control your negative thoughts. When your mind says you can’t do something, refuse to listen to it. Don’t express your negative thoughts in words; tell your mind-and say it out loud-that you’re going to do what it takes to get the job done.

It isn’t easy, but it’s worth the effort. Many people procrastinate because they’ve made up their minds that they’re going to fail. If you are one of these people, the most important thing you can do today is to stop believing what the procrastination demon has been telling you.

Human beings are unique because of our ability to change-to become more than what we are. But before we can change, we must be able to accept full responsibility for everything we do. Smokers who say they “hate” smoking are deluding themselves-as an ex-smoker, I claim some authority on this topic.

We have a choice. People smoke because they want to smoke. It may be very hard for many people to quit smoking, but that’s not the point-they’ll never quit as long as they lie to themselves about the real cause of their habit. People are able to quit smoking when they really want to quit.

Take this quiz to find out if negative thoughts are causing procrastination in your life:

  • When you tackle a job, do you expect to be successful? Do you think you’ll be able to complete the job successfully by giving it your best effort?

  • Do you visualize your success? When you face a difficult task and feel like giving up, are you able to give yourself a pep talk to stay motivated?

  • When friends, family members, or others help you recognize a habit that you need to change, are you able to recognize the truth in what they say? Do you believe you can change your bad habits?

  • Do you accept responsibility when your projects fail, rather than looking for something beyond your control to blame it on?

  • When your mind says you’re going to fail, do you try to replace these negative thoughts with positive ones?

If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, ask yourself what you can do to approach life with a more positive attitude. Do you want to go on living with negative thoughts, doubts, and fears? Are there any benefits of clinging to a negative attitude?

We can change bad habits by wanting to change them. And you can defeat the habit of procrastination in your life-especially if you believe you can.

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.

Do something today that you’ve been putting off and start astounding yourself.

Why you need an action plan to defeat procrastination

(If the audio excerpt does not begin automatically click here)

Procrastination is the main reason people fail to live richer lives. If you haven’t been reaching your goals, you may need to make a greater commitment. And the only reliable measure of commitment is action. When you delay getting started on a job or fail to complete a job you’ve already started, always ask yourself why you’re not working on it:

  1. I can’t do it and I don’t want to do it.
  2. I can do it but I don’t want to.
  3. I want to do it but I can’t.
  4. I can do it and I want to.

If you’re honest with yourself, you can probably get started on the fourth type of projects today. If you do, you will have taken the first step toward defeating the monster of procrastination.

Research shows that you can develop new habits in just two weeks if you are serious about changing. Taking action and staying focused on your goals is what makes private dreams and corporate missions come true. The tasks people avoid are almost always the ones on which the success of their projects depends. Make a list of your least favorite tasks. Ask yourself how you approach them. Do you tackle them first or leave them for last?

Think about people you know who always get things done. What are their work habits? How do they approach unappealing jobs? How do they stay focused? Try doing the least enjoyable jobs first, or put a task you dislike between your favorite ones. As Mark Twain said, “If you have to swallow a frog, don’t stare at it too long.”

If you have trouble making commitments because you think you won’t be able to live up to them, you may want to try the method that served Thomas Edison so well. When Edison had an idea, he would go public by announcing his invention at a press conference. Having told the world about it, he went into his laboratory and invented it.

You may not want to try this out at work any time soon, but I’m sure you can think of many ways to apply the technique of “going public” in other areas of your life. The point is: Thomas Edison, the greatest and most productive inventor in the history of the United States, understood how important it is to keep from drifting into inactivity. His technique for defeating procrastination was an extraordinary one, and he used it to achieve extraordinary results.

Put your favorite inspirational sayings where you can see them. Let people know when you don’t want to be disturbed. Think about the things in your environment that help you get into the flow of your work. What things distract you or make you want to postpone a job? How can you design or rearrange your environment to eliminate causes of procrastination?

Thomas Edison said, “If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” Do something today that you’ve been putting off and start astounding yourself.

“There’s only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self… Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant and interesting.”

Develop your own personal development plan (PDP)

(If the audio excerpt does not begin automatically click here)

What is a personal development plan?

A personal development plan is a structured and supported process undertaken by an individual to consider and improve upon his personal, educational and professional development. The individual is in control of his own development with the opportunity to monitor and steer his growth. It is simply a tool to encourage and support lifelong learning.

The process involves identifying the areas that need development, planning, executing and reviewing.

We all tend to have a mental block when it comes to addressing our own problems. Many people are afraid about taking time and thinking about their problems and solutions to those problems. A PDP would help them to solve their problems in an easy manner.

You could start developing your PDP anytime. Based on your present situation and role, you could draw a PDP that could help to prioritize the most important areas of your life that need immediate attention and concentration.

Identify areas that need progress - This is the first step towards constructing your PDP. You need to be in tune with your current situation in life – know who you are, what you want to achieve, what you have and what you lack. You also have to be clear about what is working for you now and what is not. You need to check on what you are ignoring, too.

Many people may delay in this first step if they have problem identifying the areas of their life that needs development. If you are one of them just think about those areas that are important to you ““ for example, you could consider the following areas: Physical and mental wellbeing, education, spiritual pursuit, finances, recreation, relationships ““ personal and professional, etc. You do not need to write down everything in detail but just make a list of these areas.

This list would help you to prioritize your areas. After you identify your areas that need improvement, write down what improvements you prefer to make in each of these areas as it relates to your personal growth.

Set a time-line on each goal - Begin with your short-term goals and then proceed to long-term goals

Write down your action plan ““ how do you plan to go about this process?

Review your plan ““ is this plan workable? Would you like to make a few changes or draw a new PDP?

Implement your plan ““ stick to your plan and follow your schedule

Review your progress - are you following the time-line? Are you progressing accordingly?

When you develop your own PDP, follow through with action and achieve your goals, you will feel like you are on top of the world. You will gain more confidence having your life under your control. You will get a great satisfaction. Take one step at a time and enjoy the process. That is the key to success.

Here are 10 good reasons why I think you should attend an upcoming course.

1. It’s simple - This course contains hundreds of small steps you can take to make your life better. Each can deliver a small positive change to your life. Add several together and you’ll really see the difference.

2. You’re in charge - The course is clearly sectioned into 4 workshops. Each workshop is clearly indexed and the tips are presented as they flow from one effects another.

3. I’d do it so why not you? - I’m not terribly brave and there’s nothing in this course I haven’t or wouldn’t try myself. Nowhere do I advocate walking on hot coals!

4. No dictionary needed - This is a course that says it like it is. There are no big words or jargon. Using a dictionary is educational but it does little for your self-confidence. This course uses simple to the point words.

5. It’s realistic - We are all daunted by people who are better than we are. Human nature is to spot where we’re weak and forget where we’re strong. This course shows you how to improve things, but does not claim to be able to make you superhuman – sorry.

6. It’s fun - Personal development should not be like a trip to the dentist, something you endure to free yourself of pain. It should be more like a holiday, helping you create the opportunity to try new things. There’s nothing here you won’t enjoy.

7. It doesn’t cost any more - Changing your life is not about spending money. This course is not a shopping list for things you can’t really afford. In fact it shows you how to save money instead!

8. It reaches the parts . . . You’ll be amazed at some of the aspects of life this course encourages you to change for the better. Remember that the game of life is all about making lots of small changes, not a few big ones. Big ones hurt and small ones don’t.

9. There’s a website too - Once you attend the course, you can visit www.asenseofdirection.co.uk and sign up for my e-newsletters.

10. It’s yours - We are all unique and different and this is your personal journey through life. This course is begging you to highlight sections, insert pieces of paper and scribble notes. It’s personal to you and for you alone. ENJOY YOUR LIFE JOURNEY !

What drives your life?

Everyone’s life is driven by something.

This poem by Russell Kelfer sums it up :

You are who you are for a reason.
You’re part of an intricate plan.
You’re a precious and perfect unique design,
Called God’s special woman or man.

You look like you look for a reason.
Our God made no mistake.
He knit you together within the womb,
You’re just what he wanted to make.

The parents you had were the ones he chose,
And no matter how you may feel,
They were custom – designed with God’s plan in mind,
And they bear the Master’s seal.

No, that trauma you faced was not easy.
And God wept that it hurt you so ;
But it was allowed to shape your heart
So that into his likeness you’d grow.

You are who you are for a reason,
You’ve been formed by the Master’s rod.
You are who you are, beloved,
Because there is a God!

Knowing your purpose gives meaning to your life.

You are not an accident… You have a purpose!

If you want your life to have impact…
focus it on something!

After all, what is life…
but an opportunity for something.

A SENSE OF DIRECTION is a course designed to help you take control of your life and create ’success habits’ to achieve lifelong happiness.

You will learn how to :

  • OVERCOME LIMITING BELIEFS
  • FIND YOUR PURPOSE
  • CREATE WEALTH
  • GET RID OF YOUR FEAR
  • DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE
  • LOVE UNCONDITIONALLY
  • ACCEPT YOURSELF
  • FIND PASSION
