"Dare to be what you are, and dare to resign with a good grace all that you are not and to believe in your own individuality."

Learning to accept yourself and other people as they are !
Today I’d like to reflect upon the notion of acceptance. Many people go through life being unhappy and feeling discontented, especially with things over which they have no control. They get themselves bent out of shape by these events. They become angry, frustrated, give up on their dreams and their ambitions. It is important to recognize the difference between those things we can control and those things over which we have no control.
Accepting things doesn’t mean that you are unwilling to challenge them and it doesn’t mean you give up all hope. It means you put things into perspective.
Acceptance leads to respect
Many people are deluded enough to think they are perfect, and feel it is their right to sit in judgement of others. Make no mistake, all religions, all spiritual masters and many philosophers agree on this point: even though we may look different, we are all equal.
Historically, the democratic institutions of the world respect equality for all. It is a fundamental basis of every democratic society that everyone is equal. But I’ll bet there is a prejudice you carry around. It may be subtle but all the same there are some people in this world you may feel superior to, and others whom you may feel inferior to.
To accept yourself as you are is simply to accept the reality of your present situation, and if you don’t like it, you know what? You really can change it. Therefore if we are to be accepting of ourselves, then it stands to reason, in fact it demands, that we are accepting of other people. It requires that we are non-judgemental.
When you judge another, you rarely do it because you’re right, you do it to make yourself feel better
When you meet another person, you do not know the journey they have travelled, the traumas that have shaped their lives and the pain they have suffered. Acceptance is just that. Accepting without judgement of yourself and others, being unconditional in accepting them as they are and not as you think they should be.
I’ve learned that acceptance is not to be confused with indifference. We all have the power of free will. What we do with it is ultimately our choice. I abhor prejudice, bigotry, narrow-mindedness, cruelty, unkindness – all those characteristics. The fact that people hold beliefs, values and behaviours that I find negative and destructive does not mean that I feel I can sit in judgement of them. I may not understand or comprehend why they do what they do, but I’ve learned it is better to accept people as they are and seek to change them by my example, or other means.
By sitting in judgement of the world around you, you are not a participant, you are simply remaining an observer. To change the world you have to participate.
